Live painting and storytelling at the EC

During the European Day of Persons with Disabilities Conference at the Charlemagne Building in Brussels, organised by DG EMPL, I was not only present as a facilitator – helping people to break the ice in the morning – but more importantly as an Artistic Harvester. Together with visual artist and painter Muriel Orange I was at the conference for 1,5 days. talking to people, listening to their points of view, gathering their ideas. And based on that input I wrote a poetic story. On the second day I told the story to the audience, while Muriel painted the story live on a big canvas in the aula. In his closing words the DG EMPL Director of Social Affairs G. Fisher showed his appreciation for our work :

It was one of the most lively and interesting events I saw happening in this room (…). We had a lot of other ways to express views. (…) We had this fascinating artistic contribution. It is a very well done event. And I was really happy to have the possibility to be here.

More importantly participants felt recognised, seen and heard. Their positive reactions afterwards were precious.

Thank you for an great contribution and an amazing performance at the EDPD 2016! Your story and painting about a little stream looking for and striving to be part of the mainstream made quite a footprint in me.
